When initially pierced the tongue with the length of the barbell must be at least 3/4" (approximately) to accommodate swelling. After piercing has healed it's recommended to change as required to shorter barbell. Usually a tongue piercing takes 4-6 weeks to heal fully. Aftercare for tongue piercings is most complicated than other body piercings, as the healing piercing will come into contact with teeth, anything that enters the mouth including food and smoke. Many certified piercers/doctors suggest that not to smoke and not to engage in oral sex as after care guidelines. And rinse your mouth thoroughly with a particular antiseptic mouthwash recommended by the certified piercer only.

Tongue piercings can damage teeth over time. And tongue, cheek, and lip piercings can cause gum problems. Use an antibacterial, alcohol-free mouth rinse for 30 to 60 sec after meals and use a toothbrush with soft-bristled to avoid bacteria infection into your mouth. If your piercing doesn't heal correctly or you feel something might be wrong, it's important to get medical attention.

Infection Issues – Lip Piercing:

Most lip piercings have the potential to damage both gums and teeth if proper jewelry is not worn, or if the placement of the individual piercing is poor. A home-made saline solution or sea salt rinse (Combine 1/8 teaspoon, sea salt to 1 cup of warm water) is a common way to heal a lip piercing and avoid infection. Complete healing usually takes several weeks or more – Lip/Labret: 2 to 4 weeks. During this period, care must be taken to avoid infection. For Lip piercing, kissing should be avoided to prevent infection during the healing process.
